Google Search Console vs. Google Analytics: Which metrics actually grow traffic?

The Common Analytics Confusion

Many founders log into Google Analytics and get overwhelmed by hundreds of terms like 'events', 'user engagement', and 'active user retention'. While those are important, they measure what users do after arriving on your site. If your goal is to get more search traffic, you need to look at Search Console metrics.

Google Search Console (GSC): The Pre-Click Metric Suite

GSC is a window into Google's search index. It tracks how users discover your website. Pay attention to these three core metrics:

  • Impressions: The number of times your URL appeared in search results. An increase in impressions is the earliest indicator that your SEO keywords are starting to index.
  • Average Position: Where you rank on average. Moving from page 2 (position 11-20) to page 1 (position 1-10) is where traffic starts exploding.
  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): The percentage of impressions that resulted in clicks. If impressions are high but CTR is low (under 2%), your meta titles are likely boring or mismatched with search intent.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4): The Post-Click Engagement Suite

Once a user clicks your link, GA4 takes over. The metric you should monitor above all others is Engagement Rate. Unlike the old bounce rate, engagement rate tells you if users actually stayed, read your content, or scrolled. A high bounce rate indicates your page content failed to satisfy the search query.

Integrating Them Together

To scale traffic, connect both inputs. Identify search queries in GSC with high impressions but low CTR, then update their landing page titles. Then check GA4 to verify if your updates increased the session length and customer conversion actions.
